THE SITUATION

In March 2026, the federal government deployed hundreds of ICE agents to at least 14 U.S. airports, including Atlanta and New York's JFK, during a partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown that left TSA officers working without pay. The stated mission was to manage security lines. ICE is an immigration enforcement agency, and its officers keep full authority to check identity, query immigration databases, and detain people wherever they are deployed. Reports have already surfaced of ICE conducting immigration enforcement at airports separate from the TSA support mission.

★ WHY IT MATTERS

When an armed deportation force is stationed between travelers and their gates, every person of color, every immigrant, and every citizen who looks foreign to an agent becomes a target. America's founding promise is that no person is deprived of liberty without due process. Turning airports into immigration checkpoints violates that promise in public, at scale, and normalizes the idea that your papers can be demanded anywhere.

Remove ICE from airport operations. End immigration enforcement at airports. Fund and staff TSA properly so travel security is never used as cover for deportation.
