RESTORE THE ELECTION ASSISTANCE COMMISSION
The referee has been pulled off the field.
The only federal agency devoted to running our elections was just stripped of every commissioner — months before November. In this country, elections are run by the states; the Commission is the neutral referee, not a player. Demand it be restored to full, bipartisan strength.
TAKE ACTION★ WHAT'S HAPPENING
THE SITUATION
The only federal election agency now has zero commissioners. On July 9, 2026, the White House fired the two Democratic members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission — Chairman Thomas Hicks and Benjamin Hovland — in a two-line email from the presidential personnel office, and its remaining Republican member, Christy McCormick, was pushed to resign. No replacements have been named.
Bipartisan by law. Congress created the Commission in the Help America Vote Act of 2002, after the disputed 2000 election, as an independent, bipartisan body — by law, no more than two of its four Senate-confirmed members may come from the same party. Its role is narrow and neutral: certify the security of voting machines, send federal election funds to the states, and maintain the national voter-registration form.
The timing is the point. This is a midterm year — primaries are already underway and the November election is only months away. The four seats can be refilled only by presidential nomination and Senate confirmation, a process that routinely takes many months. That means the agency could sit empty and unable to act straight through the 2026 election.
★ WHY IT MATTERS
We will be honest about what this does and does not do. Our 2026 elections are not about to collapse — this year’s machines are certified and this year’s funds allocated. The danger is what comes next.
A leaderless agency can be directed to add a proof-of-citizenship requirement to the national voter-registration form — the SAVE Act, the bill that stalled in Congress, imposed through the back door. It would not fall evenly: millions of American citizens lack ready access to a passport or birth certificate — disproportionately the poor, the elderly, rural voters, married women whose names have changed, and Black Americans.
We have seen this before. Every time the machinery of our elections is politicized, Black communities pay first — from literacy tests and poll taxes to the suppression we still fight today. The right to vote is not a partisan issue. It is the foundation of everything else.
★ WHAT WE'RE DEMANDING
Restore the Commission — fill its four seats through the Senate, as the law requires.
Bar any rule change — no edits to the national voter-registration form while the Commission stands empty and cannot lawfully act.
State election officials — refuse to implement any unlawful change to the Federal Form, and protect eligible voters.
State attorneys general — be ready to go to court to block a back-door SAVE Act.
Congress — the Senate Rules Committee and your members must hold oversight hearings and refuse to rubber-stamp partisan nominees.
